Issues In theatre

Nontraditional casting

There are shows that are considered to be “white understood” shows in which the show has traditionally be cast with Caucasian actors. However, this is slowly not becoming a phenomenon. In the world of theatre, there are more minorities that are auditioning for “understood white” shows. Actor’s Equity has taken a stand on this issue saying that if a role in question’s gender, sex, or race are not germane to the piece then casting is open to all. The case that I found that exemplifies this is the casting of Phylicia Reshad in the 1988 production of Into the Woods. This is a show that is considered to be a show that is traditionally cast white, but in this case the talent, and fame to a certain extent, over shined this issue and she replaced Bernadette Peters in this cast.

Nudity on Stage

Nudity on stage is an issue in American theatre. In other countries, nudity in art is not as big of a controversy. Over a span of about 60 years the American idea of nudity in art forms has become slightly more liberal. In films like, The Wolf of Wall Street where there is nudity in over 50% of the film, viewers seem to be more accepting of it because of the “distance” between the actors and the views. However, with nudity that is “in your face” there is more discontent. In cases like Hair which opened in1968, there was so much of a problem with the full frontal nudity that the Supreme Court had to get involved to allow a performance in Boston. Here is Actor’s Equity’s stance on nudity on stage:

In Section 42 on Page 44, titled "Nudity," Paragraph A lists the rules regarding nudity at interviews and auditions -- namely, there shouldn't be any, with some exceptions. An audition involving nudity requires that the producer get Equity's written consent first. Further, an actor cannot be asked to disrobe, in whole or in part, until after he or she has auditioned as a principal or chorus member; an Equity representative must be present; and "the direct professional and artistic capacity of all persons present must be attested to by the Producer in writing to Equity at the time the written permission is requested."

Famous Lead Casting

This is not a new idea that casting a star in a piece can increase earnings. In the case of the NBC Live broadcast of The Sound of Music there were 2 featured stars in my opinion. The first and probably most obvious was Carrie Underwood as Maria and the second was Audra McDonald as the Reverend Mother. I watched some of the performance to see Audra McDonald and listen to her amazing voice. I did see some of Carrie Underwood’s performance and it did not live up to the hype created by the network. Carrie Underwood is an awesome performer just not in the genre of musical theatre. This fact, however, had nothing to do with her being cast. The fact that she is a well-known artist and has some vocal talent is what got her cast. This is an issue because on Broadway this is becoming a more practiced phenomenon which makes it harder for actors who are not as well know or known at all to be cast and create a name for themselves.

Theatre in schools

Because we are coming out of (hopefully) a recession, people, especially governments, have been making cuts to budgets. The first thing that seems to be on everyone’s chopping block is the arts. Fewer and fewer schools have a theatre programs. Taking theatre out of schools is damaging to the future of theatre. If theatre is introduced to children at a young are they are more likely to go and see more performances and participate in theatre. Disney is doing something about this issue. Disney Musicals in schools is a program that institutes musical theatre in New York City elementary schools. I think that this is an awesome initiative that should be supported nationwide.

Live Music on Broadway vs Off Broadway
There are several shows that are using tracks for performance as fillers with a few live musicians. This is a tactic that is being used to cut the cost of producing a show. This is a problem for me because having a 3 piece orchestra and prerecorded filler is not the same as having a 10 or 15 piece orchestra. This is also hurting other forms of art as  a livelihood. Off Broadway however there are several shows where the opposite is happening. Not only are they using live music, but they are using the actors as the musicians. In a show that I really want to see, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,they do exactly that. This is not as helpful to freelance musicians, but it beneficial to musically inclined actors.

Let's rack up more student loans! (grad school investigation)

1.      Practical MFA program: My practical MFA program would be the graduate program at the University of Houston. This is a good fit for me because Houston is the city that I want to be in. The graduate program at U of H is a two year program and consists of studio training, production experience, a and professional networking. The 5 qualities that they pride themselves on assuring their graduates have are imagination, agility, precision, passion, and speed. The website gives a breakdown on how the program works in greater detail.  The U of H page does an excellent job of laying out semester suggestions for students as well as how to apply. First, I would need to contact someone in the theatre graduate program to schedule an audition then apply on apply Texas.

2.      Dream MFA program: My dream program would be the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music graduate program. I would like to pursue a degree in music, musical theatre, or opera. I like this university’s programs because they seem to be interlinked between the 3 art forms. In order to apply I would need to apply to the program and contact each department to schedule an audition.

I need a job!!!! (Professional theatre & teaching)

P  1.  Professional Theatre Job in Texas-This is an audition with the WaterTower Theatre in Dallas, Tx. Though I do not necessarily want to live in Dallas, this is a great opportunity. This is a SPT/ SPT 6 (Small Professional Theatre) contract show that pays $417 minimum a week. The Show is Dogfight book by Peter Duchan, music & lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. The listing gives more information as to what to bring to the audition as far as material. Though this is SPT contract show they encourage Equity as well as Non-Equity actors to audition. I am interested in this because I would like to audition for musicals after I finish my degree in vocal performance in the near future.  http://playbill.com/jobs/find/job_detail/59336.html

2.      Pro Theatre in Texas don’t qualify: The Houston Ballet is hiring a production assistant. The job qualifications that were posted on tcg.org were as follows:
HOUSTON BALLET seeks production assistant for 2014/15 season. PA works with Houston Ballet and Houston Ballet Academy to serve day to day operational and performance related needs at the Houston Ballet Center for Dance and other venues as needed. Ideal candidate will have a stage management background. Start date is May 26, 2014 and end date will be May 31, 2015. Additional information can be found at: http://www.houstonballet.org/Inside_Houston_Ballet/Employment_Opportunities/Production_Assistant/
I think that this would be interesting because it deals with a different art for and I could use some of my training from SHSU in this position. However, I am not qualified because I do not have an experience in stage management. I think that if I were to start at a community theatre as an assistant stage manager and build up my resume credits I could possibly apply for a similar job in a year or so.  http://www.tcg.org/artsearch/ad_detail.cfm?adx=225677982

3.    Pro Theatre not in Tx I qualify for: I found this listing on Playbill.com and I thought that it was interesting. I like working with younger children especially in theatre settings and this is what this company does. The listing is as follows:
Jam with Jamie is a children's musical entertainment company that does birthday parties, playgroups, and music classes for babies, toddlers, and pre-teens. The entertainment we provide is very interactive with props and instruments. Songs range from Rock/Pop to classic children's songs. Parties and Playgroups are led by one or two entertainers. We are comprised of a lot of actors and musicians and we are flexible with schedules! Most parties are on the weekends and majority of our classes are on weekday mornings/afternoons. LOOKING for upbeat entertainers who are great with children, sing, and can play piano or guitar. (or both!) Interested in entertainers who play other instruments as well. Experience with children a huge plus! Please go to www.jamwithjamie.com for more information. TO BE CONSIDERED Please email your headshot/resume and any links to video samples of you playing an instrument. Something that shows your personality. Please specify in your submission what state you are applying for.
The company is based in 4 different cities: Miami, New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles. The listing is for the Miami location. I qualify for this because I have lots of experience in working with children and I play 8 instruments.

4.      Pro Theatre not in TX don’t qualify: The Peninsula Players are holding auditions for their 2014 season. They are looking for male and female actors. The pay starts at $724 a week. This theatre interests me because of the location, Chicago, IL. I know some people who are from the city and who currently live there and they say that I would love it. This is an opportunity that I do not think is available to me because I am not an Equity actress.

5.      Traditional Certification @ SHSU: To graduate from SHSU with the teacher’s certification, I would essentially have to take a minor in education and complete those requirements which include student teaching. After this, I would then need to take the content and PPR tests in order to receive my certification. This does not fit into my plans because I plan on graduating in December of 2014 and this would delay my graduation date.

6.      Alternative Certification: In order to receive alternative certification, I would go through iTeach Texas.com because it was highly recommended. Like traditional certification, I would have to take a content exam in order to enter into the program. Then, I would be required to take teaching courses. I would probably do the online method because it would allow me to work and to do the work at my “leisure”. Once these courses are completed, I would then do my clinical which could be on the job if I am already the teacher on record or I would be assigned a school and teacher to do my teaching under a sort of mentor. After 12 weeks of clinical I would be eligible to take the PPR and then apply for certification. This program is about $4000. This is a little cheaper than a semester at SHSU. This option would work best for me because I could do this while working and I could possibly be certified in more than one field. Some schools also reimburse their employees for these classes.

7.      Community College job: Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA is looking to hire a full time drama professor for a year. They are looking for someone who is not only qualified to teach acting, but directing, and theatre history as well. They also want someone who is able to direct and assist in other areas of production which are not specified in the posting. The listing does say that a candidate should have an MFA or PhD in theatre. The salary grade is dependent upon each candidate’s experience and education. In order to obtain a position like this, I would need to complete my bachelor’s degree and then pursue my MFA.  http://www.tcg.org/artsearch/ad_detail.cfm?adx=788997861

8.      University job: Sam Houston State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of theatre specifically a musical theatre choreographer. This is a full time position and the salary grade is dependent on each applicant’s qualifications. Applicants must hold a terminal degree in musical theatre, theatre or dance and must have professional experience in musical theatre as well as a positive record of teaching, or choreographing. This position in interesting to me because I love teaching at my alma maters. I have returned to teach at me high school alma mater and I would love to return to SHSU. In order to apply for a position like this I would need to graduate with my bachelor’s and I would like to be in excellent standing with all faculty members. Then I would need an MFA in theatre as well as a few years of working in professional theatre.

Star One, Star Too, Star Three, Star Four

The Star Too Experimental Theatre group is a group based in Dubai. They describe themselves as an avant-garde theatre. All of their performances are free. Their "company" is extremely global and multicultural and I think that that comes into their performances. Though there is the global aspect to the group it still has a lot of the Dubai culture in their use of music and movement.

Liquid Culture Opera.......like kool-aid?

The Atlanta Opera participated in apublic event at the Sandler Hudson Gallery on July 30th that celebrated Liquid Culture. Now I Googled Liquid culture and I got some kind of mushroom drink? so if anyone gets anything else I'd really like to know what it is. Anywho, the Opera participated in what were called "utopia stations". With these stations, audience members were able to walk through the opera singers and through the "performance". Along side the opera singers were dancers and sculptures.http://theatlantaopera.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-view-from-bleachers-getting-taste-of.html

Experimentation

There's a company, Experiments in OPera, in where ever it is and they are all about trying new works of opera and being innovative and trying to connect the music to the story to the text. This sounds easy but....it isn't. Some of their main goals as a company are to provide up and coming composers with workshops and classes to better their craft, as well as performance opportunities. I think that this is amazing because there aren't a ton of opera houses that are doing newer works. I thought that their production of Chorus of Souls from the photographs were incredibly innovative.

The crazy man's theatre

So no one with a mental illness should be referred to as the cliche term used in some of the darker times of our country (I would argue that we are still in dark times but that would digress) crazy. The Pathological theater in northern Rome, Italy focuses on producing shows that show the perspective of people living with different mental illnesses.People within the company have mental illnesses and not only are in the shows and learn their lines but also assist with the production of the show including but not limited to the set, & costumes.  Here's the full article

The one....the only...the great Lepage!...oh and Wagner

Das Rheingold in NYC Met

So everyone knows who Robert Lapage is right? Well if you don't you're on the interwebs so go look it up. In short, Robert Lapage is a French Canadian director who is noted for being a pioneer and a fan of integrating technology including moving scenery with projections. His latest production was at the AMAZING Metropolitan Opera in New York and he did a production of the Ring Cycle written by an influential man who could be paralleled to Mr. Lepage who is an important figure to musicians, actors, directors, and technicians......Mr. Richard Wagner! This production of the Ring cycle is awe inspiring and I am completely in love with it. Hopefully this can spawn a new generation of opera and opera goers alike. Here's the FULL PERFORMANCE you heard me the....FULL PERFORMANCE.You're Welcome I just saved you 15% or more on car insurance by switching to Geico and a plane ticket to the Met and a ticket sooooo.....alot of money.
